SAFETY at workplace is often overlooked in our country. A few days ago, I saw four workers cleaning the exterior glass of a high-rise building at Motijheel without wearing any helmet or safety device. It was apparently a daredevil act, but undoubtedly foolish and dangerous. Every year many workers die at construction sites because of lack of safety measures. Many lives and families could have been saved if awareness is created about the necessity and significance of safety rules.
Often workers also complain that they are not provided with proper safety gears and are left with no other choice but to work without proper safety gears. Dhaka is a fast expanding metropolitan city and it is therefore all the more important for us to comply with universally accepted safety rules to protect lives.
